Metadata field: location_resolution

Scope: all

Required.

Type: string with fixed values

Allowed values:

From more to less specific, the allowed values are

  • 'exact_location' - the GPS coordinates are accurate, which should be used for all ocean and environmental samples unless there is clear indication that the samples were not actually taken at the specified coordinates
  • 'village' - a rural village or part of a city
  • 'site' - e.g. a hospital or clinic for human samples, or also an archaeological site if no exact coordinates are given
  • 'city' - a town of any size
  • 'region' - e.g. districts or states
  • 'country'
  • 'continent' - only used in rare cases where the country is not known
  • 'in orbit'

Default value: country

Description: How precise is the information about geographic location? For ocean and environmental samples, GPS coordinates normally accurate and exact_location should be used. Only if no exact coordinates are given (or no coordinates are given at all) for environmental and ocean samples, another value should be picked.

For host-associated sample types and especially human samples the exact locations are not known. We therefore set the resolution level based on what is reported in the publication.
